The richest people in human history until 1760

1 Augustus Caesar. $4.6 trillion. Emperor.
His wealth derived from owning Egypt as part of his private property. Egypt was 30% of Global GDP at the time. His wealth was noted to be 20% of the economy of his empire.


2) Solomon. $2.2 Trillion. King.
King Solomon of Israel received 25 tons of gold for each year of 39 year rule. This was $40 billion alone. Most of Solomon's wealth derived from business and trade from Arabia and Levant.


3) Genghis Khan. $1 Trillion. Emperor.
Khan was the Mongolian emperor from 1162-1227. The Mongolian empire stretched from China to Europe covering 22% of earth. Khan was known for not building palaces but rather spreading his wealth to soldiers and their families.


4) Mansa Musa. $415 billion. King.
Musa was the King of Timbuktu. His west African Kingdom was the largest producer of Gold which was in high demand. During a pilgrimage to Mecca, he brought 60,000 companions and 12,0000 slaves who each carried 4lb gold bar. 80 camels carried a 50-300 lb bag of gold dust.



5) Jakob Fugger. $277 billion. Banker.
Fugger was involved in multiple sectors such as mining, banking and trading. Fugger funded kings and popes, backed wars and helped make the House of Hapsburg become the most important dynasty in Europe. Historians have called Fugger the most influential businessman of all time.

6) William the Conqueror. $228 billion. King.
William was king from 1028-1087. Other names include William the Bastard. He launched the Conquest of England in 1066. His increase in land holdings from  Normandy made him one of the richest in history. He gave land to some of his supporters. A notable one in his nephew Alan Rufus who was an Earl known to be very wealthy.


7) Basil II, $169.4 billion, Emperor.
He served 49 years as the Byzantine ruler but expanded his empire. He expanded to the Balkans (notably Bulgaria), Mesopotamia, Georgia and Armenia. When he died he had accumulated 100 tons of gold.


8) Akbar the Great, 25% of Global GDP, Emperor.
Akbar ruled much of the Mughal Empire from 1556-1605. His wealth tripled in size during his reign. Economic Historians state that the Mughals had similar GDP per capita levels to Victorian England.


9) Empress Wu, 22.7% of Global GDP, Empress.
Wu was the Chinese Empress from 624-705. She is considered the richest woman ever beating Cleopatra and Russia's Cleopatra the Great to the title. Wu expanded the Tang Dynasty to central Asia making it one of the largest in Asia. She became empress as her son was too young to rule. When 690 eventually occurred, Wu convinced her son to abdicate and she then created a new dynasty. She placed the role of Emperor on herself.
